Zurich: Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich

Prior to the trip I read about this carbonated drink called Rivella. Here’s the wikipedia description: “[Rivella] is produced from milk whey, and therefore includes ingredients such as lactose, lactic acid and minerals.” From this description, I could not imagine what this soda would taste like. I had to try it.

Drinks were provided as we boarded our boat trip on Lake Zurich. While people handed me cans of coke and Sprite, my eyes lit up as I saw bottles of Rivella at the end of the table. Being at the front of a line of more than 1,000 people, we didn’t want to stop the line just to figure out which flavor is which. We randomly grabbed two bottles of Rivella and headed upstairs. Rivalla on a boat trip made my day.

Rivella

Rivella is made in Switzerland. Their attempts to sell it in UK and the U.S. failed. This drink is only available in a few countries (the Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria and Luxembourg) and it seems like Rivella is not popular at all outside of Switzerland and Netherlands. There are four flavors: original (red), light (blue), green tea (green) and the yellow one which is made with soy serum.

The most exciting moment of this trip happened on the lakeside promenade. We came to the lake for some fresh air. Lethargic in the afternoon, we sat on the edge of the lake, facing its greenish, clean water, chatting and watching a bunch of ducks and swans fighting for food and territory. Then this amazing thing happened. These silly looking black birds with a white mark on their head started walking on water! It was the funniest scene.

The next day, we sat there for so long and begged them to fly/walk again but they refused to put on another show for us. I looked up this bird online after I got home. Those were coots. (YouTube videos of them in slow motion and real speed.)

With a lunch that was not enough to feed all the participants and a dinner that was a box of stir fried noodle, we were still hungry after we finished up the bland noodle by the lake. I seconded Amanda’s idea of food hunting.

We walked to the east bank of the river and passed by those by default expensive sit-down restaurants that we didn’t want to walk in. Then we smelled something really good coming out from this small bar/restaurant. Some guy walked out with a take-out sandwich that looked pretty good as a snack. So we decided to go in.

This place was called Piadina-Bar. They sell an Italian flat bread, piadina. The first item on the menu happened to sound pretty good so we ordered one to share. It was a flat bread sandwich with parma ham, arugula and Stracchino cheese (parma stracchino rucola.) 12.5 CHF! But we shared one so it wasn’t bad at all. (The picture shows half of an order.) The best meal of the day.
