Ben and the Flags at the Old Post Office Pavilion

Benjamin Franklin at the Old Post Office

I feel like every camera owner living in or having toured DC has a picture of Benjamin Franklin standing in front of a row of U.S. flags, so I went to get my copycat shot after the disappointing sunrise at the Lincoln Memorial.

Having been living in DC for almost a year and serving as a tour guide for friends and family many times, I feel ashamed that I did not know about this place before. It would have been a really good touch as I took people to places on Pennsylvania Ave in between the White House and the Capitol. Especially when I was unsuccessful in booking a tour of the Washington Monument, this would the second best place to see DC from above.

Old Post Office

The Old Post Office was built in the 1890s and will be turned into a Trump hotel soon. The statue of Benjamin Franklin is at the main entrance on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Old Post Office

Due to a limit on height of buildings in DC, there is no skyscraper in the city . The Washington Monument (555 feet /169 m) is the tallest structure. Built in the period between 1892 to 1899, the Old Post Office was born before the Heights of Buildings Act and thus grandfathered in, becoming the third highest structure in the city. (Following the post office would be the Washington National Cathedral.)

So, the best spot for a spectacular view of DC is up on the Washington Monument. (Besides it is cool to see the interior of the Monument.) However, it is a tour you often need to book way in advance. Currently it is closed due to damage from the August 2011 earthquake. The Old Post Office is the best replacement for a good view as far as I know. No reservation is required and it is free. Park rangers offer tours a couple of times every day. You can also tour the tower yourself. Don’t expect a breathtakingly beautiful view though. This is DC that we’re talking about, not some night view of New York City or Chicago.

From the 270-foot observation deck, you can see the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, White House, Capitol and more. With a smartphone camera and a right angle, it is easy to take pictures of the Pennsylvania Ave and the Capitol, or on the other side the Freedom Plaza and the White House without having railings in the scene. Although these iron bars get in your way, they are better than dirty glass in my opinion.
