New Orleans: Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral

“What’s this Disney castle looking building!?” I though, when I saw a picture of the St. Louis Cathedral for the first time as I researched touristy destinations in New Orleans.

St. Louis Cathedral sits right in front of Jackson Square. Surrounded by artists and street performers, Jackson Square is one of the most popular destination in the French Quarter and one of my favorite place in New Orleans. This park, once called Place d’Armes, used to be a hub of local trading and commerce. Its name was later on changed into Jackson Square to honor the 1814 Battle of New Orleans hero Andrew Jackson. Now, the square in an open-air artist market. Directly in front of the Square, you can find carriages offering rides around the Quarter.

We decided to go check out the cathedral early in the morning and start our first day in New Orleans at sunrise at Jackson Square.

This tranquility was rare for Jackson Square. Early in the morning, the park was not even open. Horse carriages just started to pull in one after another.

Jackson Square looks more like this—a busy place—during the day.

Early in the morning on a Saturday, artists were just about to hang up their paintings outside of the iron fence under the banana trees.

Later on during the day, the place is full of artists, musicians and fortune tellers.

St. Louis Cathedral at night is a great photo op ─ if you are willing to carry a tripod and spend some time here. Right across the street from Jackson Square is the elevated Washington Artillery Park, which is the location to shoot the St. Louis Cathedral. Right next to the park on Decatur Street is the famous Cafe Du Monde where you can get the famous New Orleans beignets and chicory coffee.

Cafe Du Monde

  1. For the curious, the reason why Jackson Square only features mule-drawn carriages is that horses simply can’t endure the summertime heat. It’s a tradition that you see echoed in Savannah and other “dead-air” cities in the South: most of these outfits COULD cycle horses into their yearly routes, but have given into a new kind of tradition in stickin’ with the long-eared beasts of burden.
