Kitahama seems to be an under-rated travel spot in Osaka. Riverside coffee shops with outdoor seating offer a fantastic view. This is a great place to get your coffee fix, enjoy brunch, or spend a lazy afternoon.
Nakanoshima Park (中之島公園) is an oasis in the middle of the city of Osaka. The park is sandwiched by two rivers that run through central Osaka. Lots of people would take a river cruise or stroll through the park to see this part of the city. We chose to take in the sights by spending a lazy morning on the terrace of Moto Coffee.
Moto Coffee is a small coffee shop right next to the Naniwa Bridge. There are a few coffee shops like this along the river in Kitahama.
We came to Kitahama on a Thursday close to noon and waited for Moto Coffee to open. The tiny shop had seating on the second floor and the basement. Outdoor seating was very limited, with just five tables available. They quickly filled up soon after the shop had opened.
我們在一個星期四的中午來到北濱，North Shore大排長龍，我們到Moto Coffee來等開門。一樓點餐區很小，二樓和地下室有座位，戶外座位很少，只有五個小桌，很快就坐滿了。
It was sunny but chilly in late November. The brisk weather was not an issue. Moto offered blankets and space heater on the terrace.
My sister and I were eating all day. We had a big bowl of ramen for breakfast followed by takoyaki as snacks. After this coffee break, we planned on eating the signature dish of Kansai “okonomiyaki” for a late lunch. So coffee woudn’t help with our appetite and this packed foodie schedule. We opted for non-coffee drinks.
Aside from coffee, Moto is known for its caramel vanilla custard. Caramel custard is my favorite desert in Japan. Its texture is between custard and flan.
This caramel custard was rich and creamy, with a burnt cameral sauce on top. I would go back just for the custard!
The apple juice was made with apples from Aomori. (500 yen)
Their home-made non-alcoholic ginger ale was amazing! The ginger ale was infused with real, organic ginger from Shimanto City in Kōchi. (Iced ginger ale 600 yen)
After a coffee break, you can take a stroll in the Nakanoshima Park. The red brick building across the river is Osaka City Central Public Hall (大阪市中央公会堂). The neo-baroque style Osaka Public Nakanoshima Library is right next to the public hall. Towards the east, you’d see the greenery of the Nakanoshima Park. Its rose garden attracts lots of visitors in May.
Kitahama is a short subway ride from Namba and Shinsaibashi. Depending on which line you are on, you can take the subway to Yodoyabashi Station (淀屋橋駅) or Kitahama Station (北浜駅) and then walk to one of the coffee shops.
From here, you can also walk to Umeda in about half an hour for some shopping and good food.
Coffee Shop Options 北濱水岸咖啡選項
Riverside coffee shops are south of the Nakanoshima Park between Yodoyabashi Station (淀屋橋駅) and Kitahama Station (北浜駅) of the subway. We were torn among a few options. They all look beautiful on Instagram.
