Las Vegas: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Red Rock Canyon

Beautiful rock formation and desert scenes in Arizona and Utah have always been on my list of top travel spots. I secretly really want to go with my dad with our cameras. Last year Aaron showed interests in going there. As a planner plus a dreamer, I planned out a nine-day trip from Zion National Park, the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, to Monument Valley, and then circling back to Vegas through the south rim of Grand Canyon. From budget to food to things to do and see. It seems that this dream trip will not come true any time soon, so Red Rock Canyon became a tiny sample of my grand mission.

Las Vegas: Light Trail on The Strip

Las Vegas the strip at night

Day 1: Arriving LAS at 10:45 a.m. → The Strip
Day 2: In-N-Out Burger → Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area → Sushi House Goyemon → Night view on the Strip
Day 3: Lake Mead → Flying back to Pittsburgh

So, Vegas! This is absolutely not a top vacation spot I would pick. I could not care less about gambling and clubbing on the Strip. Aaron was going to Vegas for work, so I tagged along. Turned out that we had a fantastic weekend visiting the Vegas off the Strip and people watching on the Strip.

HDR Experiments: Library of Congress and U.S. Capitol

Library of Congress HDR

I finally got Photomatrix! (Thank you dad!) Haven’t gotten any chance to take bracketed photos to make a real HDR, but I could not wait and threw in single photos in to try out the software. I love HDR architecture. The first photo I threw in the software of course was one of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The original photo was from my trip to D.C. last August. (To those who are not photo nerds, HDR means high-dynamic-range imaging. In plain English, that means to bring details out of a real scene from direct sunlight to the dark shadow, um, based on my amateur understanding anyway.)

Winter Light Garden at Phipps Conservatory

After shooting damselflies at the lily pond and the butterfly exhibition at the Phipps Conservatory last summer, I wanted to visit their winter lights show.

Mission Capitol Christmas Tree Failed

Capitol Christmas Tree

Having a camera makes me do crazy things sometimes. Like getting up at 5 in the morning just to try my luck with sunrise. Or making a trip to D.C. to try something different with the Capitol Christmas Tree. But, I failed this time.

Wafels & Dinges: flaky paradise of Speculoos and Nutella

It’s been six years since Wafels & Dinges was founded. I missed it every time I was in town──either their food trucks were nowhere near me or I was standing right in front of a waffle truck while being way too full to have even one bite. When I saw the Wafels & Dinges truck across the street from Lincoln Center right after we checked in, my eyes widened with sparkles just like when the Ice Age saber-toothed squirrel sees an acorn. What a lucky start of our trip!

Brooklyn Bridge in the Fog

Brooklyn Bridge

That was in early October. We were going to take a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge and then visit the 911 Memorial. The overcast sky gave me no motivation to get up early. We did not leave our hostel near Columbus Circle until 9 a.m. Once we stepped outside and walked on Broadway, I immediately regretted sleeping in. It was very foggy. Any building taller than the CNN headquarter disappeared in the heavy mist. Sprinting to the Metro and hoping the fog stick around for a bit longer, I had to make it to the Brooklyn Bridge right away.
