Good-bye, Easy Mt. Washington Sunrise

Pittsburgh Mt Washington sunrise

The sunrise last Saturday was not all that glamorous. Yet it was the last day that I was able to get up early and easily make it to Mount Washington by myself before I end the lease of my Shadyside apartment and completely move out of the city. That milestone status makes this morning trip blog-worthy.

Calling this easy however, is giving Pittsburgh transportation too much credit.

In late June, sunrise in Pittsburgh is at about 5:50 a.m. On weekends, public transportation does not run that early. Even if you are willing to go through the hassle of taking two buses and then a ride on the incline, nothing runs that early.

I woke up at 4:50 a.m. and pulled up my Uber app to make sure I could get a ride. Two cars within 13 minutes. I thought I was good. Ten minutes later, all the UberX’s were gone! My request with Yellow Cab of course went nowhere after a 20-minute wait. In the end, a Lyft driver, Benjamin, saved the day. (Thank you, Benjamin!)

The sunrise wasn’t great. But given this overcast to stormy weather in June, I consider myself lucky.
